Russia launches Chinese satellite

MOSCOW: A Russian Proton-M rocket completed the successful launch Saturday of an advanced Chinese communications satellite that should help expand television coverage in parts of Southeast Asia.

The Roscosmos space agency said the AsiaSat 7 satellite was placed in its designed orbit after being launched from the Baikonur space centre in ex-Soviet Kazakhstan.

The mission was accomplished after a recent string of Russian space failures that included the botched launch this summer of what was billed as Europe's largest telecommunications satellite.

The Hong Kong-based Asia Satellite Telecommunications Company (AsiaSat) said in a statement that its seventh orbiter will support "a broad range of applications for the Asia-Pacific region" including television broadcasts.

"With AsiaSat 7 successfully launched ... we can assure continuity of service to customers, while at the same time adding to our on-orbit capacity to service new business," said the company's chief executive William Wade. (AFP)

Samsung wins appeal in Apple tablet battle

SYDNEY: South Korean electronics giant Samsung Wednesday won its appeal against a temporary ban on sales of its Galaxy tablet device in Australia, a rare victory in its legal battle with rival Apple.

The Federal Court of Australia in Sydney lifted the ban on the sale of the Galaxy 10.1 Tab ahead of a final hearing, with the US giant claiming the device copies its iPad computer.

But Apple immediately won a stay of orders, meaning that Samsung will not be able to sell the Galaxy in Australia until 0500 GMT Friday.

"The appeal will be allowed," the judgment by Justice John Dowsett, Justice Lindsay Foster and Justice David Yates concluded.

"Samsung will be permitted to launch the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia provided it keeps accounts of all transactions involving that device in Australia or originating from Australia."

The Federal Court granted an interim order against the sale of the Galaxy 10.1 in October, ruling that Apple had established a prima facie case that the South Korean company had breached touchscreen technology copyrights.

The Sydney court heard it would take a week to prepare to launch the Galaxy for sale in Australia, and Samsung argued against the further stay on sales. (AFP)

Toyota unveils high-tech concept car

TOKYO: Toyota's president unveiled a futuristic concept car resembling a giant smartphone to demonstrate how Japan's top automaker is trying to take the lead in technology at the upcoming Tokyo auto show.

Toyota Motor Corp. will also be showing an electric vehicle, set for launch next year, and a tiny version of the hit Prius gas-electric hybrid at the Tokyo Motor Show, which opens to the public this weekend.

But the automaker's president, Akio Toyoda, chose to focus on the experimental Fun-Vii, which he called "a smartphone on four wheels" at Monday's preview of what Toyota is displaying at the show.Read more

Vending machine offers DIY banners at Dutch airport

AMSTERDAM: Ever wanted to meet and greet your loved ones at the airport to be sure they don't miss you in the crowds?

Then try Amsterdam's Schiphol airport, which now has the world's first vending machine capable of printing out personalized giant canvas banners in just a few minutes.

You can pick your message, whether that is "Missed you Mummy," "I love you," "Will you marry me?," or anything else that makes you stand out from the crowd, choose the font and background design, pay between four and 15 euros ($19.98) depending on the length of the banner, and hit the button.

"We came up with the idea because when we were at the airport we'd see all these people welcoming their friends and family with their own banners made of bed sheets and we thought what a hassle using sheets, wouldn't it just be easier to make the banner at the airport," BannerXpress's co-founder Thibaud Bruna told Thursday.

Bruna's first machine, which was three years in the making, made its debut at Schiphol Thursday. If the waterproof banners prove popular, he hopes to install the vending machines in other locations.

"We hope have them in other airports, but also in stadiums for sporting and music events," Bruna said. (Reuters)

The shark, a predator turned prey

BERGEN: Sharks may strike terror among swimmers at the beach but the predators are increasingly ending up as prey, served up in fish-and-chips shops, sparking concern among environmentalists.

The great white shark, the one that most frequently comes to mind, is a protected species -- though that hasn't prevented its stocks from declining -- but tens of millions of other sharks are caught each year by fishermen.

Why are they in such demand? Their fins are the main ingredient in shark fin soup, a prestigious dish in traditional Chinese cuisine, and even in Europe shark meat is often served to consumers, usually without their knowledge.Read more

What would Mars probe failure mean for Russian space?

As Russian hopes of reviving the stranded Phobos-Grunt space probe fade, the nation's entire planetary exploration programme for the next decade hangs in limbo.
Designed to bring samples of ancient soil from the mysterious Martian moon Phobos, the spacecraft got stuck in low-Earth orbit immediately after its launch on 9 November.
If all attempts to restore the contact with the probe fail, Russian scientists, and many of their colleagues abroad, would lose a unique opportunity for planetary research, for which they have been preparing for almost two decades.

US hits Iran with new sanctions

WASHINGTON: The United States announced fresh sanctions against Iran's energy sector Monday and warned firms against dealing with its banks as it pressed Tehran to abandon its nuclear weapons drive.

'The message is clear,' Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said. 'If Iran's intransigence continues it will face increasing pressure and isolation. Today the United States is taking a series of steps to sharpen this choice.'

Clinton, unveiling what she called a 'significant ratcheting up of pressure on Iran,' said the United States was targeting Iran's energy sector directly for the first time.

Army denies Taliban talks

RAWALPINDI: The Pakistan Army has strongly denied media reports that they were in talks with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

A spokesperson for the ISPR said the Army was not undertaking and kind of negotiations with the TTP or its affiliated militants.

Such reports are concocted, baseless and unfounded, he added.

Any contemplated negotiation/reconciliation process with militant groups has to be done by the government, the spokesperson concluded.Reads more

London 2012 Olympics fraudsters on their marks

In eight months time, athletes on the Olympic track or cyclists in the London 2012 velodrome will be seeking out their opponents' weak spots and taking the chance to strike for gold.
Outside the Olympic Park, fraudsters and counterfeiters will be doing much the same, as they try to trick the many visitors to the Games out of their money.
From accommodation and parking to tickets and merchandise, these con artists will be taking every opportunity to make money from the festival of sport coming to the UK.
That is the warning from trading standards officers, police and consumer groups as the build-up to the Olympics continues.
So far, there have been relatively few reports of scams connected to next year's Olympics. Some counterfeit London 2012 lighters were seized in Coventry, while some clothing copies have been found on an internet auction site.
The massive ticket sale included the launch of a website checker, put in place to help people cross-reference whether a reselling website was legitimate.
However, at the launch of the "Good Sports Don't Fake It" campaign for National Consumer Week, experts lined up to warn that more cases should be expected in 2012.
While security may be tight at the sporting arenas, opportunities are likely to present themselves in other areas.
Mark Smith from Operation Podium, run by London's Metropolitan Police, says that other sectors that would expect to benefit from the influx of visitors could be at risk of fraud. This includes the illegal sale of theatre tickets.
"The criminal economy is worth millions of pounds," he says.
Elsewhere, rogue businesses could attempt to rent out parking spaces close to venues, contravening the rules of residents' permits, according to Teresa Perchard of Citizens Advice.
"We need to get ahead of the game for issues that are just around the corner," she says.
"Businesses might be tempted to cut corners because their finances are under pressure."
She adds that there are reports of tenants being given notice by landlords who believe they can charge more for property close to an Olympic venue.
Deposits have also been paid for properties in the capital that may not even exist, she says.

How much privacy can smartphone owners expect?

The US Supreme Court could soon allow police to monitor the movements of US mobile phone users without a warrant. Now that most of us carry sophisticated tracking devices in our pockets, how much privacy do we have a right to expect?
Millions of us happily invade our own privacy every day on Twitter and Facebook, sharing personal details with the world and broadcasting our location in a way previous generations would have found bizarre.
Even those who shy away from social media and new technology in general are not immune. The most basic mobile phones are in constant contact with the nearest mast, sending information about the whereabouts of their users to phone companies, who can later hand that data over to the police, if requested.
At the other end of the spectrum, in the world of smartphones, privacy is becoming an increasingly outdated concept, argues technology writer Sam Biddle. What might once have been considered "creepy" and invasive is becoming normal.
"That line of creepiness is there, but it's eroding quickly because, frankly, we are just getting used to it," says Mr Biddle, a staff writer for Gizmodo.com.
"Something like (smartphone app) Foursquare, something like Find My Friends, these things all would have sounded like something from 1984. Now they are fun and free.
"So I think whatever line there once was is receding very quickly."
He adds: "The excitement and the novelty of it blinds us to the fact that is a little weird and maybe, in terms of privacy rights, a little ominous."
For the smartphone customer "it's a trade-off, in terms of privacy versus service," he says. For the mobile phone company "following you around is just part of the service".

No more excuses – leading companies in WWF Scorecard show sustainable palm oil sourcing is possible now

Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia – Companies in Europe, Australia and Japan are buying more certified sustainable palm oil than ever before, but urgent action is still needed to avoid the irreversible loss of tropical forests, according to WWF’s latest assessment of the industry that buys palm oil.

“It’s never been easier for companies to be responsible about the palm oil they use,” said Adam Harrison, Senior Policy Officer for WWF UK and WWF’s representative on the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) Executive Board. “There are options available for almost any company to buy certified sustainable palm oil. Yet the WWF Palm Oil Buyers’ Scorecard shows that only half of the palm oil used by the companies we assessed is sustainable. So it is clear that some manufacturers and retailers have fallen behind on their commitments to 100 per cent sustainable palm oil, while others haven’t even started at all.”

WWF’s Palm Oil Buyers’ Scorecard 2011 - an update of the first scorecard published two years ago - measures over 130 major retailers and consumer goods manufacturers by looking at their commitment to, and use of, palm oil certified to the internationally recognised standards of the RSPO.

Of the companies scored, WWF believes that many are making commendable progress to increase their use of sustainable palm oil and to reduce their impact on deforestation.  Most of the companies scored in both 2009 and 2011 have taken some strides forward, showing how the use of sustainable palm oil is slowly becoming more mainstream.

Released at the 9th Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, the Scorecard, which assesses both RSPO members and non members, also shows that 87 of the 132 companies (i.e. 66 per cent) surveyed have committed to sourcing 100 per cent RSPO-certified palm oil by 2015 or earlier, an encouraging sign that could spur further market development.

However, nearly half of the retailers and more than a fifth of manufacturers scored very poorly on taking responsibility for the impacts of their palm oil sourcing.

“The leading companies in the Scorecard demonstrate that it is possible to source certified sustainable palm oil to cover most or all of their palm oil usage, so there are no excuses for all companies not to take action now,” says Harrison. “But 2015 is just around the corner -- all companies, even some of the top performers, need to move faster.  Only then can we ensure that the momentum gained by the RSPO is not lost and avoid the negative impacts of irresponsible oil palm plantations on forests, wildlife and communities.”

World's 'lightest material' unveiled by US engineers

A team of engineers claims to have created the world's lightest material.
The substance is made out of tiny hollow metallic tubes arranged into a micro-lattice - a criss-crossing diagonal pattern with small open spaces between the tubes.
The researchers say the material is 100 times lighter than Styrofoam and has "extraordinarily high energy absorption" properties.
Potential uses include next-generation batteries and shock absorbers.
The research was carried out at the University of California, Irvine, HRL Laboratories and the California Institute of Technology and is published in the latest edition of Science.
"The trick is to fabricate a lattice of interconnected hollow tubes with a wall thickness 1,000 times thinner than a human hair," said lead author Dr Tobias Schaedler.
Low-density
The resulting material has a density of 0.9 milligrams per cubic centimetre.
By comparison the density of silica aerogels - the world's lightest solid materials - is only as low as 1.0mg per cubic cm.
The metallic micro-lattices have the edge because they consist of 99.99% air and of 0.01% solids.
The engineers say the material's strength derives from the ordered nature of its lattice design.
By contrast, other ultralight substances, including aerogels and metallic foams, have random cellular structures. This means they are less stiff, strong, energy absorptive or conductive than the bulk of the raw materials that they are made out of.
William Carter, manager of architected materials at HRL, compared the new material to larger low-density structures.
"Modern buildings, exemplified by the Eiffel Tower or the Golden Gate Bridge are incredibly light and weight-efficient by virtue of their architecture," he said.
"We are revolutionising lightweight materials by bringing this concept to the nano and micro scales."
Robust
To study the strength of the metallic micro-lattices the team compressed them until they were half as thick.
After removing the load the substance recovered 98% of its original height and resumed its original shape.
The first time the stress test was carried out and repeated the material became less stiff and strong, but the team says that further compressions made very little difference.
"Materials actually get stronger as the dimensions are reduced to the nanoscale," said team member Lorenzo Valdevit.
"Combine this with the possibility of tailoring the architecture of the micro-lattice and you have a unique cellular material."
The engineers suggest practical uses for the substance include thermal insulation, battery electrodes and products that need to dampen sound, vibration and shock energy.

Egypt unrest: Protesters gather for Tahrir Square rally

Egyptians are gathering in Cairo's Tahrir Square for a mass protest to put pressure on the military to speed up the transfer of power.
Violence broke out again in streets close to the square and a BBC correspondent there describes the situation as volatile.
Three days of clashes between security forces and protesters have left at least 28 dead and hundreds wounded.
The unrest has thrown into doubt elections due to be held next week.
Demonstrators are concerned that the military intends to hold on to power, whatever the outcome of the vote.
The military leadership, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (Scaf), is holding talks with political leaders - a day after the military-appointed civilian cabinet offered its resignation.
It is not clear if the resignation has been accepted.
The Muslim Brotherhood - whose Freedom and Equality party is widely seen as the most formidable contender in the elections - is also taking part in the talks.
However, it has refused to participate in Tuesday's protest - presumably, say correspondents, because it wants the election to go ahead to show how much support it has in the country.
Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, the head of Scaf, is expected to make a statement later, Egyptian television reports.

Defiant Asif changes defence team for appeal

LONDON: Cricketer Muhammad Asif has changed his legal defence team to launch an appeal against his conviction and sentence, this significant development has been disclosed by a credible source to The News/Geo.

Asif was given a 12 months prison sentence whilst ex-captain Salman Butt was jailed for 30 months, and Mohammed Amir received a six month term for their participation in a plot to bowl deliberate no-balls in a Test match against England. Butt and Amir have appealed against their sentences but not their convictions. Their appeal will be heard on Wednesday, tomorrow.

During his testimony, sports agent Majeed, who has been jailed for 32 months for orchestrating the scam, claimed to have paid paid Asif £65,000, Butt £10,000 and Amir £2,500.

The source has said that Muhammad Asif decided to change his defence team for “personal reasons”. The fast bowler remains most defiant that he has not committed any offence and certainly has not brought the game into disrepute.

The police raided the team hotel in August last year. They did not find any money that was supplied by the News of the World journalist on Asif’s person or in his belongings. Intense investigations did not reveal even a trace of the tainted money linked to Asif. Such money was found on Amir and Butt.

The source told The News that Asif has already spoken to his new legal team and a meeting was held at Canterbury prison where he is in custody with Salman Butt. Asif’s appeal hearing will be delayed by a short period by reason of the change of his legal representatives.

If the appeal against his conviction is successful, the player would be a free man. The UKBA may take steps to detain him for immigration reasons. If such steps are taken The News understands that the same would be opposed vigourously.

The grounds of Asif’s appeal are being formulated at the time of the publication of this article. Such grounds could include the argument that the Judge may have fallen into error in some of the rulings he made during the trial.

The News has learnt that UK visas held by Muhammaad Asif and Salman Butt have expired.

Technically, they both could face deportation to Pakistan at the completion of their prison term. Any such application, The News has learnt, would be met with formidable legal arguments from Asif’s representatives.

Weightless US teachers eye giant science leap

LONG BEACH: "Excited," "nervous," "terrified" - just three emotions described by a group of US teachers about to take a dizzying "weightless" flight all for the cause of science, naturally.

The 30 classroom professionals donned blue "astronaut" jumpsuits to defy gravity in the skies above California, in a project designed to help them capture the imagination of young science students.

On the back of her jumpsuit, teacher Michelle Luke taped a drawing made by her pupils at Manhattan Beach Middle School, southwest of Los Angeles, showing two figures taking a giant weightless leap into space.

But with only a couple of hours to go before the flight, her smile was still a little tense.

During the flight - in which a specially-decked out plane does a series of parabolic climbs and dives, the only way to experience weightlessness without going into space -- the body is subject to 1.8 G forces.

That makes the body feel nearly twice as heavy as it is - the downside in the steep climb phase, before participants fly up off the floor, shrieking as they float around the cabin like astronauts in the International Space Station. (AFP)

3-day gas outage to kill textiles: APTMA

PESHAWAR: All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) Chairman, Mohsin Aziz has said that three-day gas outage would bring the textile industry to a grinding halt, Geo News reported.

Talking to Geo News here, he said that myriad of crises has already thrown so many spanners in the works and denying us gas would prove last nail in the coffin of this threadbare industry.

The worst hit would be textile exports, he said warning depriving industry of gas for almost half-a-week would only add to closures and subsequent unemployment bringing more and more people under the line of poverty.

Aziz told Geo News that the total volume of global textiles was $300 billion with Pakistan’s share just at $14 billion, which could only be boosted if textilers were given more and more facilities.

That’s why the last year’s export target set at around $16 billion could not be achieved, said he proposing an ambitious target of $25 billion for the current year.

He also urged the government to ease the markup rate down to 6-7 percent.

Samsung holds final talks on Google TV venture

SEOUL: Samsung Electronics is holding final talks with Google about launching a television using the US search giant's software platform next year, an executive of the South Korean company said Tuesday.

Yoon Boo-Keun, president of the visual display division, declined to elaborate on the timing of the launch saying only that Samsung would not unveil the new model at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January.

Samsung is the world's largest maker of flat-screen televisions, but wants to offer more high-tech models such as smart TVs to boost profits amid global competition on prices.

The Google TV will let users surf the Internet, check email and create social networks just as they do on computers and smartphones.

Google's executive chairman Eric Schmidt visited South Korea this month and met executives from Samsung and LG Electronics.

Analysts believe the US giant wants to further expand the reach of its Android operating system into televisions through partnerships with the world's two largest television makers.

Samsung hopes to sell 45 million flat-screen televisions this year, including 12 million smart models. (AFP)

Energy Solar solution

Instead of investing heavily in the oil-run power plants, the government should explore the abundant solar energy potential for power generation
By Tahir Ali

Though Pakistan is beset with an acute energy crunch, it has failed to exploit the huge hydel power resources as well as the abundant solar energy potential for the power generation purposes for years.
The resourceful but unfortunate country receives high levels of solar radiation — approximately 1000 watts per square meter for most parts of the year. Global solar energy potential is estimated at 800 million megawatt while Pakistan has, according to an estimate, about 100,000MW solar energy potential, as it is the 6th luckiest country in the world where sunrays are available extending up to 16 hours in summer.

But Arif Allauddin, the chief executive officer of the Alternately Energy Development Board (AEDB), recently said that 2.9 million MW of electricity could be produced by utilising solar energy alone in the country.Read more

Significance Of 11/11 In Britain And Mischief Of A Tiny Muslim Group

The 11th of November has a very special connotation in Britain and in many European countries that together formed the so-called Entente Powers during the First World War. Celebrated throughout the country as Armistice or Remembrance Day,

it marks the day in 1918 when an armistice was signed to bring a formal conclusion to that war, a long and brutal confrontation which, by the time it had ended, had resulted in almost fifteen million deaths with another twenty million suffering casualties.
